CFB 27 Recruiting Guide: Verbal Commits, NIL Offers & 5-Stars

Recruiting in College Football 27 works on a different calendar and a different currency than CFB 26. The four changes that matter most, all from EA’s Dynasty deep dive:

• The preseason is scouting only. You can no longer offer scholarships in the preseason. Offers open in Week 0.
• Every offer carries NIL. A scholarship offer now includes an NIL amount, paid from your Dynasty Points budget.
• The Top 8 stage is gone. Recruits move Open → Top 5 → Top 3 → Verbal Commit → Hard Commit.
• Verbal commits can flip. A verbally committed recruit can still decommit if another Top 3 school passes you. Only a hard commit is final.

EA also reworked recruit generation: more high-end speed, stronger five-stars built to contribute immediately, and a rare generational recruit at the very top of some classes.

The verbal commit bonus is based on pipeline strength, Team Prestige and Proximity to Home — so the schools that win verbals are usually the ones that were already natural fits.

If a recruit is still only verbally committed when signing day arrives, they automatically hard commit and signs with that school. A late push that passes a verbal leader has to happen before signing day.

Each prospect has an expected NIL amount driven by star rating, position, dealbreaker and your Team Prestige. Five-stars generally expect more than four-stars.

The practical consequence: every point you commit to a prospect is unavailable for staff, facilities and roster NIL until that recruit signs somewhere else or you drop them. Offering 2x on a long board ties up budget you may need at the End of Season Recap to keep your own players.

Nothing guarantees a five-star, but the CFB 27 rules point clearly at where your odds are best. The first four points follow directly from EA’s mechanics; the rest is common community strategy.

   Recruit where you already have an edge

   The verbal commit bonus comes from pipeline strength, Team Prestige and Proximity to Home. A five-star in your pipeline, near campus, is the one most likely to commit to you, and that bonus helps you hold the lead.

   Budget for them specifically

   Five-stars expect the most NIL, and a 2x offer gives the biggest weekly bonus. Decide before Week 0 how many five-star offers your Dynasty Points can carry.

   Don’t overpay early and cut back

   An above-expected offer sets a new floor; dropping back later costs you influence every week. Raise an offer when you need to pass a rival, not by default.

   Get to hard commit

   A verbal from a five-star is not the finish line. Keep recruiting until the hard commit, because any Top 3 school that passes you flips the recruit.

   Scout before you spend (community strategy)

   With the whole preseason dedicated to scouting, players commonly scout their top targets fully before Week 0 and commit NIL only to the prospects that are worth it.

   Staff for recruiting (community strategy)

   Support staff can increase weekly recruiting hours or reduce players’ NIL expectations. Programs chasing top classes commonly prioritize those two staff types.
