Weekly practice plans
Weekly practice plans are new in College Football 27. Each week you choose how hard every player practices, trading XP and the chance to start hot against Wear and Tear and practice injury risk.
| Plan | XP | Wear and Tear | Injury risk | Game day |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Full | Most | No recovery | Highest | Best chance to start hot |
| Limited | Less | Recovery boosted | Lower | Lower hot chance, higher cold chance |
| No Practice | None | High recovery | None | Plays, but high chance to start cold |
| Week Off | None | Maximum recovery | None | Does not play |
- By default, players are on a conservative plan that prioritizes recovery.
- Injured players can’t practice and are set to Week Off automatically.
- You can set plans player by player or for a whole position group.
- The Visionary archetype’s Practice Makes Perfect and Hot Start abilities increase practice XP and the chance of starting hot.
How to use practice plans
The trade-offs above suggest a simple approach. Treat it as a starting point, not a rule of the game:
- Young players you’re developing: Full or Limited — XP is the point, and they carry less of the game-day load.
- Starters heading into a big game: Limited, to recover while keeping a chance to start hot.
- Banged-up starters who must play: No Practice — maximum recovery while staying eligible, at the cost of a likely cold start.
- Players you can rest: Week Off in a game you can win without them.
What boosts progression
| Lever | Effect |
|---|---|
| Athletic Facilities grade | A higher grade directly increases the progression and development boost your roster gets. Your facility tier caps the grade. |
| Support staff | One staff type increases offseason player progression. |
| Facility equipment | Reduces practice Wear and Tear, season health usage and practice injury chance. |
| Practice plans | Full practice gives the most XP. |
| Coach abilities | Visionary’s Practice Makes Perfect raises practice XP. |
EA has adjusted progression twice since launch: the July 16 update increased offseason progression across the board, and the August 6 update rebalanced progression costs across key ratings. Facility and staff spending both come from your Dynasty Points budget.
How redshirting works
- The limit: a player keeps redshirt eligibility by appearing in four games or fewer in their freshman season, according to Operation Sports’ CFB 27 guide.
- Where: Dynasty main menu → Team → Redshirt. Players shown grayed out aren’t eligible.
- The risk: a player who is unhappy about being redshirted can leave through the portal, so redshirt players who weren’t going to see much of the field anyway.
Development traits: what we know
Players carry a development trait — Normal, Impact, Star or Elite — that shapes how fast they grow. EA hasn’t published new CFB 27 rules for how traits change. Here is what’s confirmed, and for which game:
| Rule | Confirmed for |
|---|---|
| A player can upgrade their trait in the offseason after a strong season, judged by their stat line relative to their position. | CFB 26 (not restated for CFB 27) |
| Upgrades aren’t guaranteed, and the better the current trait, the harder it is to move up. | CFB 26 (not restated for CFB 27) |
| Impact, Star and Elite players have a higher minimum offseason progression. | CFB 26 (not restated for CFB 27) |
| The Encourage Transfer screen shows each player’s dev trait. | CFB 27 (August 6 update) |
| Recruit quality improved at the highest tiers. | CFB 27 (August 6 update) |
Position changes
EA’s CFB 26 rules for position changes: a player keeps only the abilities shared between their old and new archetype, and their skill caps are adjusted by how closely the new position relates to the old one. EA hasn’t published changes for CFB 27, so check a player’s abilities before and after a move.
Track who developed
The game shows this year’s overall. It doesn’t show how much a player grew from freshman to senior, or which recruiting class produced your best developers. CFB Clipboard keeps each player’s ratings and stats season by season, so progression is visible across a whole career. See how to track a CFB 27 dynasty.
